From the Editor

Welcome to the June edition of the Newsletter, summer is nearly here I think, unless we have another weekend like the last bank holiday, I was supposed to be going camping that weekend and setting up a portable station, I am so pleased we called it off. As you read this I will be in sunny Spain concentrating on the important things in life, sun, shopping and sangria (or some other alcoholic beverage).

On the radio front things are a bit quiet around here, had plenty of contacts on PSK but very little on SSB, I am trying to persuade the OM to become all patriotic and buy a flagpole so that I can get the wire up higher. He is not having any of it though!

Still a bit thin on the ground for articles so please get writing, and like I said in the December issue it would be nice to have crosswords and word searches, just send me the rough designs and I will try to get them in a printable format.

I will sign off now and catch you further down the log HI

Welcome to another new member Chloe Barker 2E1 IDT

“I am currently in my final year at Swansea University studying English and History, but I am hoping to start another course next September. My brother is also licensed as 2E1KIP and studies in Swansea too. We were both introduced to radio by our cousin G7KWO about 6 years ago and have an uncle licensed as G7KWP as well.

Up until now I have mainly been operating on 2 metres but have recently managed to get on HF at home and have been learning Morse. I am hoping to use CW on a few of the SOTA trips I have planed with M0PCB over the summer.

My other hobbies include walking, cycle training, re-enacting, juggling and reading but I don’t seem to have much free time for any of these at the moment.”

THE WORKED ALL BRITAIN AWARDS GROUP

John Morris G3ABG (now deceased) devised the Worked All Britain Awards Group (W.A.B.) in 1969. It aims was to promote an interest in Amateur Radio in Britain and it sponsor a series of awards based on the geography of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Ordnance Survey map references are the foundations, and there are numerous road atlases and Internet sites available to assist members in determining locations.

W.A.B. also aims to create more activity on the air by British amateurs and in doing so creates friendships within the country and overseas. It is true to say that many lasting friendships have arisen through W.A.B. activity.

The membership has now grown to over 8,000 individuals worldwide. A recent claim was  received from a station who had worked members in over 50 different DXCC countries.

Band conditions permitting, regular nets are run where mobiles will go out with the aim of activating W.A.B areas for members to collect. At a recent A.G.M., Gordon, G3POD/M and his wife, Terry, were presented with trophies for the tremendous achievement of activating over 4000 WAB areas.

During the last couple of years, all areas & parishes on Guernsey, Herm & Sark were activated by GU4LAB/M, and an activation of one of the rarest 100 km O.S. grid squares OV. The latter feat was achieved single handed by John, G4YSS, operating under the Scarborough Special Events Group callsign of GX0OOO/P.

Whenever possible W.A.B. makes donations to organisations helping less fortunate radio amateurs , such as St. Dunstan’s ARS and R.A.I.B.C.. In the past, specific fund raising activities have sponsored an in-shore lifeboat & guide dogs for the blind.

W.A.B. also organises contests throughout the year on various bands and modes. Numerous stations who are not W.A.B. members, have commented that they are the friendliest contests they have come across. Participants often stop for a chat to renew old acquaintances, so do not expect just to receive a 5,9 contest style report if you call in.

A recent development is the W.A.B. record book now being available on both CD ROM, and in paper format. One advantage of the CD ROM is that, when issued, it is up to date, with new bookholders, change of callsigns etc, whereas paperwork can be out of date before it reaches the printer. That format is still retained though, as it is appreciated that some people still like paper to spread out & thumb through, although the CD is more environmentally friendly!

Trowbridge and District Amateur Radio Club

The Committee of the above Cub decided that the club should participate In the R.S.G.B. 2.m competition during the weekend of May 19th/20th.

The location chosen, was a disused airfield at Charmy Down, north of Bath on A46 grid ref ST754 -701 approx. and accessed by a meandering stone rubble and gated track - the derelict observation tower and buildings still remain and now owned by Hartley Farm.

Thus on Saturday morning about 10.00 am dry sunny but windy morning Six members plus Hazel G7RG1 and Jennie MOHZT. Hazel's VW trooper was used to provide teas and snacks throughout the weekend. Chris GOHFX was overseeing the working party advising on safety and erection of the two 2 x 13 Yagi and Tonna aerials - one with manual rotation the other with an electric rotator both fitted with L.D.F. coax cable and heliax cable.

The site power was provided by a hired Steephill Generator 5.5. KVA 50Hz (110 /240v). A home brew 400w amplifier / Dresser VHF linear amplifier. The transceivers an ICOM IC 746 and ITS 780. The “Shack” an ancient ex army tent, so with all aerials erected, power on, all systems Go

Transmission commenced at 1500 hours Saturday 19th 2007 with Chris GOHFX transmitting on the Icom 746 and Dave MOGHZ monitoring the contacts via a computer, recording the location of each call and postal area. At 2100 hours served final teas and the guys continued transmissions until midnight then closed down.

On Sunday morning at 6.45 am took tea and bacon rolls to the “SHACK” and found that Chris and Dave were already transmitting and continued throughout the day. A few local members looked in to observe the “event”. In the adjacent field the local model aircraft club concerned that we were on the same frequency but were informed that we were on another. A few private single seater planes hovered over head, Cesna and microlite etc.

Transmission finally closed down at 1500 hours Sunday May 20th the operators had made 305 contacts but there maybe more as yet to confirm several postal districts or the Maidenhead square worked to be checked. As the only two ladies that attend the club it was rewarding that we were able to contribute to the success of the weekend event, the Club came fifth in the competition.
